Oscar Wilde has fascinated readers and audiences for over a hundred years. Rupert Everett seemed a good choice to play him and he did not disappoint. David Hare, the playwright did an excellent job of keeping everyone in suspense, even though everyone knows exactly what happened.
The question that does not really get answered though, is why did he do it? Why did he sacrifice everything for Bosie, who was clearly such a self indulgent shit? The only answer offered is that the heart wants what the heart wants, which seems a bit feeble when the result is prison and hard labour! Charlie Rowe, who played him, did an excellent job of making us all hate him.
Ultimately though, the play was good but not great. The sets and the acting were excellent, but the play was depressing. The truth is not always satisfactory.
