The first of the season here in Mesa was a fun production  of Ira Levin’s classic presented by Mesa Encore Theatre. I can’t reveal the plot, since that would spoil the fun, but let’s just say there are many twists and turns in the play about a play or two and a murder or two.

As usual with this company, the cast was a mix of amateur and professional. Scott Hyder as Sydney Bruhl is very experienced, although he did fumble his lines several times, mixing word order, not forgetting the words. Maybe he is just demonstrating the age of the character.

Daniel Giraldo as Clifford Anderson is a recent high school graduate who has no previous acting experience. Based on this production, he should definitely follow up on his plan to go to acting school and plan on a career as an actor.

Petey Swatrz was good as Helga Ten Dorp, but i could not help thinking how much better Seana McKenna would be in this role.

All in all  a fun start to the theatrical year. We will now watch the 1982  movie starring Michael Caine, Dyan Cannon, Irene Worth and Christopher Reeve.

I agree with Cathy, not a world-class production but reasonably done and a fun evening.
The two members of the cast Cathy didn’t mention were Mitch Etter, very competent in the small role as the lawyer, and Debra Lyman, who was less comfortable as the wife.
Cathy’s comments about Giraldo are fair, despite the fact that she saw him through a curtain of lust. The drooling on me when he took his shirt off was particularly disgusting.
