Once again we were impressed with the quality of amateur theatre in the local area. This time it was a production of Cabaret in St. Mary’s. We arrived at City Hall too late to get a program, so will not be able to refer to most players by name. But it was a very polished production, with a very good cast. Even the orchestra was beautiful! Actually the orchestra was great, under the capable direction of Karen Rempel.

The staging was interesting and took full advantage of the limited facilities. And the costumes were very good even though I had to wonder if some of the lingerie came from the owners drawers.

The singing was excellent, although occasionally a little stiff. It is hard for nice people to act sleazy – that seems to be one key difference between the amateur and the professional.

Having the prostitute sing Tomorrow Belongs to Me was a stroke of genius. Her voice was really lovely and the song brought the usual chills down my spine. Mention must be made of Herr Schultz, played by Paul Rempel. He was a perfect, quiet fruit seller. Fraulein Schneider was also very good, but was clearly a lot younger than her makeup.

A excellent bunch of musicians in the band and some fine singing.
The good burghers of St. Mary’s perhaps had a little trouble getting their sleaze on for the Kit-Kat Club, but they gave it a determined shot.
