Peter and the Starcatcher

I am not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly was not this! Hilarious play, with every bad pun you can imagine thrown in with pirates, dancing mermaids, Italian chef pirates and great physical performances. I imagine the cast goes home exhausted after every performance.

Kids will enjoy the play, even though they will miss many of the jokes. Adults loved it. Twelve stellar performers, covering many more roles than that. Kate Besworth hit all the right notes as Molly, as did Charlie Gallant as Boy (Peter Pan). I loved the battle between Graeme Somerville as Slank and Martin Hopper as Black Stache; the amorous Shawn Wright and and Jenny L Wright as Alf and Mrs Bumbrake were equally delightful.

It definitely put the “Pan” in “Panto” – or, rather, the “Panto” in “Pan”. Lots of dumb, and slightly risqué in some cases, jokes for the adults to groan over with a fun story for the kids, all the while providing lessons about growing up.

We should definitely take our eight-year-old grandson, if it weren’t for the logistics. Pity it isn’t at Stratford.
