Oedipus Rex

A friend commented that he would have to increase his donation to the Festival so they could afford more costumes, referring to the extended nude scene when Oedipus comes undone. But the scene was entirely appropriate and certainly not erotic.

Gord Rand was excellent as Oedipus, dominating the play as he should. the chorus was very effective. Yanna McIntosh gave a strong performance as Jocasta as did Christopher Morris as Creon. Interestingly, it felt that both of these actors would have been more comfortable in traditional Greek dress, while Rand was perfectly comfortable in modern dress (or undress). Nigel Bennett was marvellous as Teiresias.

One Response to Oedipus Rex

Classical Greek theatre is so different from what we are used to; I always find the chorus’ role in mediating between the play and the audience difficult to handle. Still, I enjoy watching these root stories play out, and this was an excellent cast and production.
The tragedies are much easier to relate to than the comedies – which is a bit depressing.
