Winners and Losers

Crow’s Theatre in a co-production with Canadian Stage. Directed by Chris Abraham. Written and performed by Marcus Youssef and James Long.

It starts as a fun little game – pick a topic, argue about whether it is a winner or a loser, declare victory, ring the bell and move on. But gradually it becomes more and more personal and harder to watch as the two actors are playing themselves, and revealing way more than most of us would be comfortable doing. At one point I found myself thinking “I hope his father is dead, because I would not want him to hear this”.

But it is gripping theatre, brilliantly performed by two talented actor/writer/directors from Vancouver. Definitely worth watching  and worth watching out for more productions from Crow’s Theatre, and from these actors. I am already a Chris Abraham fan.

One Response to Winners and Losers

This was a strange one. Quite fascinating to watch but, as the writers/actors say the content is largely autobiographical, you wonder, as the comments get ever closer to the bone, how they can do this every night without the usual separation of the performers from the material. Still, an entertaining evening for the audience that becomes enthralling as the silly game digs ever deeper into their live, personalities and relationship
