Between the Sheets

Jordi Mand is clearly a playwright to watch. Between the Sheets, starring Susan Coyne and Christine Horne was gripping from the first moment. The dedicated teacher meets the parent who is married to her lover. Drama ensues. I was tempted to say fireworks, but drama better captures the controlled nature of the conflict.

The playwright’s notes summarize things nicely: ” It is about the lengths we go to to protect what is  essential to our hearts. It is about hidden fears, unspoken longings, and the impact these have on our lives. It is about surprising connections and the consequences of our actions. It is about the empathy we fell towards others in spite of our own personal pain…..”

This was a world premier, presented by Nightwood, but it will not be the last we see of the author.

It speaks to the quality of the writing and performances that you sympathise with both protagonists.
This is only the second time I have seen Christine Horne, the other time was at Luminato a couple of years ago, but this was quite a different performance and speaks to the range she has.
